Cullen hangers have been tested in various applications and I-Section steel details can be found in the Cullen Technical Guide. Unfortunately Cullen hangers are not suitable for use directly onto rectangular hollow section (RHS) and square hollow section (SHS) steel sections. This applies to both timber-to-timber and timber-to-masonry hangers.
Top fixing hangers directly to the steel is not suitable due to the radius causing a weak point for the hanger. Unfortunately face fixing directly to the face of the steel has not been tested at this time. The recommended method would be to gain engineer detailing of a shot fired timber to the face or top of the beam and fix the Cullen hanger directly to the timber member.
